Mind the gap - a Primer on Canadian environmental legislation

Canadian environmental legislation is complex, a situation linked to our governance system, and delegation of resource management. Understanding these jurisdictional differences is the key to understanding how resources are managed across Canada - an essential tool for wildlife professionals. This webinar will explain the division of jurisdictional responsibilities, and the overlaps in environmental legislation, adding an important resource to your professional toolkit.

Wind energy and bats: can we have the benefits from both?

Wind energy is an important component of renewable energy in our effort to slow or reverse
climate change. However, three species of migratory bats are killed in large numbers by wind
turbines in North America. Bats provide benefits by consuming large quantities of insects,
including pest species. I will discuss how bat fatalities at wind turbines can be reduced and the
benefits from both wind energy and bats can be achieved.

Dr. W. Alice Boyle

Avian Ecology and Conservation in Grassland Systems

Alice is an avian ecologist who has studied tallgrass bird dispersal, population biology, and responses to climate variability in Kansas for the past 13 years. This work has revealed the incredibly mobile lifestyles of grassland sparrows, the importance of that movement to their demography, and the ways that rainfall influences their population dynamics. She recently moved to Western University and the Centre for Animals on the Move in London Ontario and looks forward to initiating new grassland research in Canada.
