WILDLIFE STEWARDSHIP
through science & education in Canada

| ABOUT CSTWS

Since 2007, the Canadian Section of The Wildlife Society (CSTWS) has been dedicated to promoting wildlife stewardship through science and education in Canada. Our members are drawn from provincial, territorial, and federal governments, universities and colleges, environmental and wildlife conservation groups, resource industries, First Nations and the general public. This includes scientists, managers, educators, students, technicians, planners, consultants, and others interested in the management, conservation and study of wildlife populations and their habitats.

wildlife policy & governance in Canada

| CSTWS & FEderal policy

Given signficant differences between wildlife policy and conservation at the federal level in Canada and the U.S., the CSTWS hired Justin Duncan on a contract to investigate how the CSTWS could begin to engage in a more meaningful way in Canada. This was funded through TWS, with CSTWS also contributing funds.

Phase 1 has been completed, which includes the report written by Justin. You can read the full report here

As part of Phase 1, the CSTWS hosted a symposium on Wildlife Policy and Governance in Canada, in April 2025, in Ottawa, ON. An engaging keynote, an incredible panel of speakers, and interesting submitted talks were followed with a world cafe session, with the aim of gaining the perspectives from conference participants, to help inform future steps.

Dr. Dee Patriquin and Bill Harrower have drafted a follow-up report to share what we heard from that session and to help integrate it with the CSTWS strategic plan and Justin's report.

You can read the document on what we heard here

Dee has generously donated many hours of her time to this project, and the CSTWS is extremely grateful for her work.

Stay tuned on Phase 2!
